Dear Friends of Kindle & Kids:

Greetings once again from all of us at Kindle Orphan Outreach. There is no special theme for this letter... just several bits of news to help keep you up to date on what is happening here, and to give you fuel for praying!

MEASLES: First of all - Thank you to those who have been thinking especially of the medical teams throughout Malawi as they have been involved in a massive measles vaccination campaign. I read in the newspaper that the goal was to vaccinate 6 million children in the 5 days of the campaign. I believe it might have happened! Here in the Kindle catchment area of 36 villages, with the 3 teams working out of Katawa Clinic, it is estimated that up to 3,000 children were vaccinated. Meanwhile, there continues to be new cases of both children and adults with measles coming to the clinic each day.

These are 2 of the many measles cases seen at Katawa Clinic. And the vaccination campaign in action.

CONGRATULATIONS are due to Cecil Mskambodzya, the Head of the Community Development Department. He successfully completed driver training in Lilongwe this month, and passed the test. This will be a big help to him in his work as he transports building supplies for irrigation projects, carries goats and farm inputs for the Kolezani project, and works with the community in many other ways. Capacity building for the staff is one of our goals this year, and helping Cecil to accomplish this is one way of reaching that goal. Thank you for praying for Kindle staff.

NEWCOMERS: We welcome Reto & Anja Widmer to Kindle staff. They come to us from Switzerland, so Malawi is a big change! For his required year of Civil Service, Reto will be teaching Math and Science at the Kaphirintiwa Community Day Secondary School, where many of Kindle's sponsored students attend. Anja will also be teaching Bible Knowledge 2 days a week at the school, and will also be involved in the Family Life Ministry of Kindle's Spiritual/Social Department. School will open on 6th September, so in the days before then Reto & Anja are getting settled, and starting to learn Chichewa. We look forward to this closer connection with this school, and our students there.

There are some other "newcomers" I would like you to meet: Innocent, the baby on the right, and Enoke, his twin brother on the left. These babies are 3 weeks old. Their mother died following a Caesarian Section at the Salima Hospital. Her 2 younger sisters, pictured here, have "inherited" these precious little boys to care for and raise. As you can see, they are very young.... One not much more than a child herself. They have come to Kindle for assistance and are now part of the Friday Special Needs clinic. We praise God for the opportunity of sharing light and hope and daily food with many like this little family.

CHALLENGES: Every ministry has its ups and downs and Kindle is no exception. For example: We rejoiced when God provided through a group in the U.S. for the Gadi Family Life Ministry group to purchase an ox-cart and 2 oxen in order for them to work in their garden and also generate some income for their families by renting it out. The cart was purchased and joyfully taken to the village, as shown in this photo. Then 2 handsome young oxen were found to buy at a market a few kilometers down the road from Gadi . Joy turned to dismay when on the way home, walking the oxen along the side of the road, in a bizarre series of events both oxen were hit by 2 different trucks over a kilometer apart and killed. Fortunately, through the sale of the meat, enough has been recouped to purchase one replacement ox. We pray that God will provide for the group in the States to help their friends at Gadi get the second ox. These are the kinds of things that keep us leaning hard on God and on our friends around the world.

So, with these little "windows" into life at Kindle, we say good-bye for this time. May each of you be blessed in your daily service for our great God.

From all your friends at Kindle,
Marilyn Barr
Acting Director
